all that and more right here on Hello again, cheese head nation, it is time for more packers, news, fun and frivolity. Here on cheese head radio now in our 17th year, talking about our slightly unhealthy obsession with the Green Bay Packers football team as usual, our distinguished host tonight are CD Angeli of packers talk, known as tundra vision on social media, Kelly Hodgson of cheesehead radio, known as that Packer girl on social media, and little old Me Jersey al of packers talk and she said, TV, find me at Jersey Al, GBP, this show and all packers talk podcasts are sponsored by Wisconsin's own ticket King. CD Angeli 2:02
Alright? Guys, we were gonna get ready for this show. We've been prepping all week for this show. We're going to talk about that really nice preseason win, right? Nice preseason win over the Seahawks. It was kind of reassuring 20 to seven. That was the big news. This is no longer the big news in Packer country, ladies and gentlemen, oh my gosh, the Green Bay Packers have pulled off the boldest move since a certain defensive end named Reggie White back in 1993 they said it couldn't be done. They said it wouldn't be done. They said there's no way Brian Gouda cons is going to pull this one out. Somehow it goes against everything we've ever done, and yet it happens today, a blockbuster trade. Micah Parsons is a Green Bay Packer.
Jersey Al Bracco 3:00
Crazy. I mean, it's bizarro world in packers land right now, right?
Kelly Hodgson 3:06
Nobody expected it. It was kind of wild. I've, you know, still finishing up at work. I get walk into my office and my phone has blown up by just about everybody I know, going, Holy freaking shirt malls, Micah persons,
Jersey Al Bracco 3:20
yeah, immediately I had to go check for some, some type of authority. Authority. Authoritative. Can't say the word authoritative source instead of just random tweets that I was seeing and to confirm, because I really didn't believe it at first either, you know, probably all, somebody got scammed, possibly, but no, nobody got scammed, except maybe for the Dallas Cowboys. But we'll talk about that.
Kelly Hodgson 3:47
You know, there was some excitement building this week. I don't know if anyone else saw that. John coon took to Twitter earlier and just said, Micah Parsons, you know, eyes. And since he kind of works for packers, Incorporated either he was going to have enormous egg on his face earlier in the week, or he knew something we did not know.
CD Angeli 4:07
It's weird, because there's always clues being dropped for all these massive trades that the Packers never do, right? And we've all learned we're just like, Yeah, whatever, yeah, whatever
Unknown Speaker 4:17
it was, Coon, he works for them,
CD Angeli 4:21
one of the neat conversations I had was with Andrew Brandt, friend of the show, always seems to have just an inside Brainiac look at what's going inside Ted Thompson's head, what's going inside Gouda consent. He knows all these people, right? Ed policy, and even he came out and said, I didn't see this coming. It totally so an Andrew Brandt is fooled, yeah. So Al, give us some details. What is what is the deal? What is the trade? What what do we win? What do we lose?
Jersey Al Bracco 4:55
Well, the Packers traded two first round picks. Picks in 2026 and 2027 their first round picks. And really to me, much to my surprise, and maybe the most surprising thing, Kenny Clark. So Kenny Clark, who I believe is the last player on the team that was still drafted by Ted Thompson, actually is partially responsible for us getting Michael Parsons. The contract, from what we've been told so far, is four years, 188 million, 120 million of that is guaranteed, and 136 million total guarantees. I think the 120 guaranteed was right up front, if I'm not mistaken. So right now, he is the highest non paid quarterback in NFL history, but that'll be until the next guy becomes the highest non paid quarterback NFL history. You know how that goes but any case, that is the contract. You know, people are saying it's a Reggie White moment, and, you know, I don't think you can be very far off of that.
Kelly Hodgson 6:13
You know, it's been 30 years since they've had a transaction this impactful, and that just kind of broke. You know, the internet would have been around when Reggie White was was, but it wasn't the internet would have broken with Reggie White signing with the Packers. And I think this is the biggest transaction since that time, and I think he's going to have, hopefully as big of an impact.
CD Angeli 6:40
And, you know, and I'll give a little credit to Zach Jacobson, Frank, this shouldn't be totally surprising. Brian Gude cons has added Josh Jacobs, Xavier McKinney and Mike Parsons, and all of these players are 26 years old or
Jersey Al Bracco 6:59
younger. That's the key. Yeah, it's
Unknown Speaker 7:01
a huge long term investment. Yes,
CD Angeli 7:03
remember that? That Kenny Clark? I think he's about he's pushing 30, if I'm correct, and was the on the team.
Kelly Hodgson 7:11
Well, if he wasn't the last of the Ted Thompson drafts, of course, yeah, yeah, he would be pushing 30, because we're starting to get several years out from the the Thompson era now.
CD Angeli 7:20
So obviously, Micah Parsons is an all Pro, and we can probably conceivably say he's not his prime yet. That's incredible.
Jersey Al Bracco 7:32
Yeah, he's played four years in the NFL.
CD Angeli 7:36
So amazing. So let before we get into a little bit more of the the the details on this and the impact. Let's talk about Brian gudekunst, because Brian CUDA cons has always said, You're never one player away. But it seems today, maybe we were one player away. Are we one player away? Is this, this aggressiveness coming from Brian gudekunst, as we just said in the last 17 months, what is this communicating to us as fans? What is it communicating to the organization?
Jersey Al Bracco 8:14
Well, I guess this was the one player, right? That's how he felt. And I think, like I said, before the age, you know, the the relative youth of this player, to be this good at this age and to have him under control for, you know, another four or five years is, I think, the key is, what made it worthwhile to him.
Kelly Hodgson 8:37
And this is the definite difference between, between this trade and getting Reggie White. Reggie White was kind of at the end of his career. We had him for good. Well, yeah, because he really, he was on the up, he was peaking, and then it just he wasn't the same after he left. But no, he's younger. He's got energy. He's going to be explosive. Is going to be a huge presence in the locker room. I think there's all upside on I'm giving him. I'm just still in shock that the Packers are actually that bold and did it.
CD Angeli 9:11
You know, I've been saying for quite some time now, 2025 is the beginning of what I determined to be the window, right? That this is where the guys should have matured. This young team, maybe still young. This is where they should start pressing deep into the playoffs. I didn't expect that in 2023 didn't expect it. 2024 I've said I expected this year. Then I watched the first two preseason games, and it went now suddenly it's like Brian guts, thinks the window is starting now. Is that what you're feeling now like, Hey, we are going to take a swing. We're going to get the best player, best defensive player we can get in here. And we're we're all in. We're all in this year.
Jersey Al Bracco 9:58
Well, I mean, he has said he does. To believe in Windows, right? That he always drafts, he always makes moves with future in mind, right? Not just immediate now, but this certainly, I think, changes all that. I mean, you cannot deny that. If he tries to deny that on this move, then he's got no credibility.
Kelly Hodgson 10:22
Yeah, he might not be looking at, you know, the last you know, one number one player away, but he's really good at playing Tetris, though, fitting all the pieces in the in the in the play. You know, you've got Josh Jacobs, you've got, you know, we now mentioned this later, we drafted a first round wide receiver, which we've never done it all in like forever, and the strategic choices over the past two years seem like you're just kind of filling the holes that they've needed to take it to the next level. So, yeah, not one player, but yeah, he's playing chess, obviously,
CD Angeli 10:57
you know, and it's been this weird tap dance this week with ed policy, obviously the new team president, the back and forth. Oh yes, I totally believe we're all really good friends. Totally believe in our triumvirate of La Fleur and ball and Gouda cunts. They're doing great. But there's been all this speculation, right, that the extensions for them are supposed to be coming, and maybe they're coming. Maybe they're not the the Twitterati been trying to suggest over the last few days, if you've been paying attention, yeah, I don't know. Maybe le Fleur and gookun should be fired. Yeah, you know, they obviously don't have votes or anything like that. But it's funny how just that feeling was coming in all sudden. Boom, here we are. Micah Parsons, it's like, everyone just shut up. Everyone. No one's talking like that anymore. Are they all said? It's like, boom, yeah, yeah, never mind. Good because you're fine. Wait. Way to go. Good job.
Kelly Hodgson 12:00
I'm still surprised that we talked Jerry Jones into it too, because that's kind of a long and surprised he gave up. And I know that Parsons wanted out, and he sat out the entire season with his nebulous back injury, but I'm surprised he parted with him to a pretty long standing rival
CD Angeli 12:22
well as someone who actually lives in the Dallas area. Now, I can tell you that there is not a lot of love lost for Jerry Jones among this fan base, and I can also guarantee you that this move did not endear himself to any of his own fan base. It is, it is, they do not believe they came out ahead on this deal, even though Jerry Jones is trying to sell it is, yep, this is a Herschel Walker all over again. No,
Jersey Al Bracco 12:51
not quite. He wishes,
CD Angeli 12:54
yeah. So yeah, the Crypt Keeper, I don't think is is, is is getting a win on this one. So let's transition right now a little bit into a roster impact. This now changes things. Losing Kenny Clark in the middle is now going to look at a very young group of defensive tackles, which, oh, by the way, we're wondering why perhaps go to constant le Fleur were keeping this huge stable of defensive tackles tremendous depth. Now maybe we kind of understand, because there's going to be a lot of young guys playing in that middle. But now we have Sean Gary and Lucas Van Ness and all these guys are going to be, Parsons Gary in particular are going to be. This could be elite, you know, and then ness and Inga Bari, who we love, they're rotating in. I mean, this is an amazing edge rushing team right now,
Jersey Al Bracco 13:58
yeah. And I think I expect them to, you know, and they've done this a little bit. They've played with the idea. But I, I expect them, on passing downs, to move Van Ness inside, huh, and have him rush from inside. So now you've got Gary Wyatt, Van Ness and Parsons. Now they always talk about, you know, the floor. And halfley talked about, they want to be able to rush with four. They want to be able to and they weren't able to last year. They had to come up with all these, you know, pressures and simulated pressures, you know, still rushing for people, but never with the front four. I think now you're going to see them be able to do that. You
Kelly Hodgson 14:42
Yeah. So do you think Van Ness will have a breakout season this year because of if the state theoretically switch them over? Do you think you'll he'll have a breakout season?
Jersey Al Bracco 14:50
No, because I that's not going to be a full time job. I mean, he has no doubt he has lost snaps, no matter how you want to. You know how you want to. Phrase that he has lost snaps,
CD Angeli 15:02
but I will, I'll interject on that jersey. Al Go ahead. Reggie White came and he made all these players around him better, even if they were playing roles. He elevated their game. So if this is what Mike Parsons brings, is, yeah, he's a really solid all Pro, but he can bring these guys who, you know, they've been okay, but they've had their struggles. Van Ness has had his struggles. If they can all come in and actually start, even if Van Ness only has 1520 snaps a game, but he's doing something with those 15 and 20 snaps. Yeah. I mean, I like said, I don't see him becoming a breakout Pro Bowl player, but he can be impactful now, because now the attention is on a guy who's going to be able to take on two blockers and win.
Jersey Al Bracco 15:54
No, absolutely. I was just saying not, you can't be a breakout player if he's not playing most of the game. That's all but yes, all your points are well
Kelly Hodgson 16:03
taken. But I wonder also, in along those lines too, of raising up the players around you, rash and Gary kind of vanished into the woodwork for a lot of last season. You know, maybe this allows him the opportunity to step up if,
Jersey Al Bracco 16:16
well, teams can't focus on him anymore, can they? No, they can't be looking at double teaming him and chipping him. They got somebody else they got to do that with.
CD Angeli 16:28
Yeah, and I like what you said. Al about moving Van Ness inside, because Parsons comes in as maybe something more idealized for a three four defense. And the Packers, of course, famously switched to a four three when Jeff halfley came in. So might be saying, Oh, it's a square picking round hole, if I'm Jeff hafley. And these are now the the toys I get to play with, the stuff he can do, kind of like you said, Where are you going to put someone so they don't know where that rush is coming from, and they're all playing at a high level. I think it's going to be exciting, because it's not going to be standard. It's not going to be business as usual. I mean, in this if I'm Jeff hafley and I've got that creative streak, going to me, you can do some great stuff with this team.
Kelly Hodgson 17:14
I think it really leads to an element of unpredictable defense. You know, who do you you bank on it's going to go be the attack and who's going to be the decoy, so to speak, you can't assume anything now.
CD Angeli 17:31
So let's talk about the other shoe. This is a great play. This is exciting. The fan base is charged up absolutely, but it is a cost. He is now the highest non quarterback contract in league history. The Packers are now handling this, and Jordan loves contract, right? It's making 47 million per year. We know we have the new TV deal coming up, and it's going to give us a little more cap room in a couple years, but you've lost your first round pick for the next two years. How does this impact this team? Is the cost reasonable, as far as you guys believe?
Jersey Al Bracco 18:20
Well, I mean, losing pick number 32 two years in a row isn't so bad. Isn't
CD Angeli 18:27
out for the win, out for the win, for the win.
Jersey Al Bracco 18:30
That's how it ends up.
Kelly Hodgson 18:32
I think it's worth it. Yeah, let's just hope they're too glorified second round draft picks,
Jersey Al Bracco 18:37
right? And plus, you know, if you're going to criticize Brian gudekunts for anything, it would be success of his first round picks. You know, he's had some wins, but he's had a bunch that really have not been wins, that maybe should have been wins, right? So you're giving up. I'm sure he doesn't look at it that way, that oh, they were, I haven't been good with the first round. So what do I care but us as fans? I think might look at it that way a little bit.
CD Angeli 19:09
So the biggest impact, the positives, as I said, is not just his potential, his sack, his his his pressures. It's going to be that locker room and leadership effect. And honestly, between you Me and four walls, it's kind of funny, as I'm listening to a lot of these millennials and Gen Zs on Twitter or blue sky or whatever, because we're old enough to remember Reggie White, right? I mean, we actually lived through that. We know what it was like, and we get to talk about it all the time, and the youngins hate listening to us talk about it. It's like, oh my god, quit living in the past. It's like us growing up and listening to all the, you know, the glory years people. So they're saying things like, this is our Reggie White. This is our Regi and you can feel that they're connecting the dots. The youngs are like, this is what we've been waiting for. We want our opportunity, someone who's going to come in and not just be a tremendous player impact, but somebody who is a force of personality, Julius peppers, who came in a couple years ago, really did a lot there, the swagger, the fear factor, the thing now that he's going to be the face of every promo with the Packers are getting ready to play. That's exciting, serious question, and obviously time is going to answer it, and this is just us predicting, prognosticating. Is this on the level of Reggie White as the olds who actually live through it?
Kelly Hodgson 20:50
If it pans out, yes, I think Lambo, in two weeks, is going to go absolutely bananas when he comes out on the field, like I would not be surprised if they announced the defense, not the offense for the home opener, and he's the last one to come out of the tunnel, the crowd is going to lose its mind, the boomers Gen X, and everybody underneath us is going to be like, that's our guy.
CD Angeli 21:23
Jersey, what do you think is this Reggie White? 2.0 or no? No,
Jersey Al Bracco 21:28
I'm not willing to go there yet. No, okay,
CD Angeli 21:31
I kind of agree with you. All right. So a lot of reactions. I think it's really exciting. We're going to end quarter one right there. Mike Parsons is a Green Bay Packer. Moving on to quarter number two. We can talk a little bit more about the 53 man roster. That was big news earlier in the week. Obviously, the Packers paired down to 53 we always had that precursor where, oh, you know, this is just the initial 53 other big moves can come in. Let's take a look at this present right now as of Thursday night, what this 53 man roster looks like, and maybe just some considerations. Let's just take it position by position real quick. Final 53 quarterbacks, Jordan love, Malik Willis, only two quarterbacks on the roster. Any reactions from you guys on that.
Kelly Hodgson 22:21
No surprises, obviously.
CD Angeli 22:27
And only carrying two quarterbacks is fine. They pick up Clayton tune, which I thought was interesting, because they got rid of both of their guys vying for the third quarterback and the roster, and said, Yeah, we don't want either. Yeah, we'll bring in someone else.
Unknown Speaker 22:40
I'm actually surprised. I thought that we keep older small.
CD Angeli 22:44
I didn't like his footwork. I was
Jersey Al Bracco 22:46
still better a long way to
CD Angeli 22:49
go, long way to go at running back another place they went a little light was with three active running backs, Josh Jacobs, obviously, Emmanuel Wilson had a really nice camp again. Chris Brooks, who kind of came out of nowhere and had some really, all around skill levels, was really, really exciting there. Only going with those three. Marshawn Lloyd is on IR will probably come back later in the year. And Israel, Abani can conda, they say that close
Jersey Al Bracco 23:21
money condo, yes, this is the one I gave you the pronunciation,
CD Angeli 23:28
unless you got buns on. Anyway, he'll be on the practice squad. But obviously we're betting on Jacob staying healthy there. Okay, wide receivers, this is big, right? A group that is really, really beat up and has not been healthy. We're going to talk about Jane Reed a little bit later, so we don't have to go into that right now, but we got Dobbs, Reed, wicks, golden Malik Heath makes the team.
Kelly Hodgson 23:57
I'm not surprised by that at all. And
CD Angeli 24:01
Savion Williams, of course, makes the team. The draft pick a little bit later on. Was he the third, I think
Jersey Al Bracco 24:07
Third, we really haven't seen very much exactly been injured, but obviously the third round pick, they're not going to exactly keep
CD Angeli 24:16
them any surprises on Michael Hardiman, not only not making the team because they don't appear to have a clear return game returner yet. But then also that he actually made the practice squad, that a veteran player like that is going to sit on our practice squad. So any surprises with Nicole there?
Jersey Al Bracco 24:34
My surprise is that he's on the practice squad. Wasn't, not that he wasn't, didn't make the team because I didn't expect him to there just wasn't room. And if, if, really, you know you're just going to be a punt returner. Are we going to put you on the roster week one and guarantee your salary for the entire year? No, so we're going to cut you if you make it through waivers. Fine. If you want to come back, we'll put you back on the practice squad, and now we don't owe you all that money. And if we feel like we want to call you up for a couple of games, you know, to return funds or or if a wide receiver gets hurt, we've got some veteran experience
Speaker 1 25:13
there. Yeah, I think it was, it was good Moneyball is what it was. Yeah, it's
Jersey Al Bracco 25:18
smart moves all around. You know, I can't, I can't. Think it makes Hardman feel very good about, you know, very good here's like a Super Bowl champion, you know, and now he's sitting on a practice squad, but such as life in the NFL,
CD Angeli 25:36
yeah, I think you get the feeling his agent probably looked at him and says, Well, let's take a look at the six guys in this roster. And I got a feeling
Jersey Al Bracco 25:42
lot of injuries. Yeah,
CD Angeli 25:44
you're, you're probably getting called up pretty, pretty quick there, buddy. So okay, tight ends, they kept the same for us last year. Kraft, Musgrave, Fitzpatrick, Sims, while is on practice squad. Any surprises? There probably none.
Jersey Al Bracco 26:00
Well, I had all four. A lot of people thought they would go with three tight ends. I saw so many. I I saw so many predictions that just had craft Musgrave and Fitzpatrick. And, you know, those people are just not paying attention to Matt Leflore because he loves himself some tight ends. You know, he's always carried four tight ends. And in some cases, maybe they weren't a traditional tight end, and maybe they were more of a full back tight end hybrid or whatever. But it doesn't matter. They were carrying four people, you know, in that, in that, in that role. So no surprises there.
Kelly Hodgson 26:37
And it always seems at any given time, there's one tight end that's hurt, so having four is just smart, yeah.
CD Angeli 26:45
So moving to the offensive line, this was a preseason jumble, lot of injuries, obviously, not playing necessarily your starters, much of the time either. So still trying to settle this in the predicted starters, Jenkins, obviously, moving to center, that's big banks, Tom Rasheed Walker and Ryan. But then we have Jordan Morgan there, Anthony Belton, I believe was, he was a draft pick, right? Yeah, second rounder, Donovan Jennings canard. And then also couple reserves, with the injuries we got, Monk Williams and Glover. There's a lot of folks there. Do you feel like those are the starting five? Or do you think there's still going to be some bouncing around?
Jersey Al Bracco 27:30
I think as as far as starters go, you have your starters. You know the the only question is, is Morgan going to be a starter somewhere on the line? Is he going to beat out Walker. Is he going to play in ahead of Ryan or right guard, or is he going to be the number six guy? Put him where you need someone for that game, right? And I have a feeling that's probably what the Packers are looking at this year, if, if they don't feel that he just outright beat Rasheed Walker, you know, out of the left tackle job. But they're set for starters. The big thing there with the offensive line was they went out and they brought in Darian, right? They went outside of their group that had been with them all camp, and brought in somebody else. I think he's played three years in the league, if I'm not Curt, you know. And he, oh, yeah, three years in the league and three Super Bowl rings he has, doesn't mean he's played much for any of those teams, but at least he's, he's, you know, he has some experience. So that was big. That's, he's your backup tackle, for sure, if Morgan ends up playing guard, right? But
Kelly Hodgson 28:39
if Morgan is your kind of jack of all trades that can move around. We always seem to need somebody like that. Because you look at every year, it's like a guard goes down, if you get them back, then a tackle goes down. You gotta be able to have somebody that you can fit in, you trust into, into multiple positions. And I think Morgan could actually be that
Jersey Al Bracco 28:55
player. And the interesting thing about that is, traditionally, that jack of all trades guy has been like the fifth round pick or fourth round pick, and, you know, some, some guy that they brought, they got cheap, and now here they're talking about, well, we're talking about a first round pick as a potential jack of all trades. So that's a little bit unusual, but doesn't mean it's a bad thing,
CD Angeli 29:20
no. So let's move on to our front seven on the defensive side of the ball. We've already talked about it at length a little bit, so really thinking on on the outside the edge in a defense band, we got Micah Parsons, huge Rashawn Gary talking about that being a great duo there, as the starters, then NASA ngobari obviously able to go in. And then Brenton Cox and Baron Sorrell, the rookie. Cox had a great preseason. And then the defensive tackle core, I think this is where the story is going to be with the absence of Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, former first round pick. Eric Carl Brooks, Colby, wooden Warren, Brinson, Nazir, Stackhouse, some really neat names there. That's 11 active players. There a lot of people on that defensive line.
Jersey Al Bracco 30:14
Yeah, there's, there's a lot of young people there that they like that they didn't want to risk losing Sorel Brinson and Stackhouse, that's three. You know, they had to keep them. They didn't want to risk losing those, those three. And I think that's a big reason why you have that many, because they don't need that many,
Kelly Hodgson 30:33
and it keeps the defense, defensive line really fresh. You know, you don't have to be playing every single snap on defense, and when you start grinding out your players, and they start to wear out around two thirds the way through the season, and you can rotate through some very impactful players and keep everybody fresh and hopefully healthy.
Jersey Al Bracco 30:57
And there are snaps to be had now with Kenny Clark on right. Yeah.
Kelly Hodgson 31:06
So it pains me that he's gone. He was really a good player, but I think we all have to remember if football is business, and I think this is was good for business, so to speak.
CD Angeli 31:20
So moving on to the linebacker. We got five active guys, you know, for our two middle positions. Quay Walker, any free agent year coming up here. So if he's going to step it up, this is the year you want to see it everyone's favorite. Edrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, just can't get rid of the guy. Man, he's just, he's just always there. Tyron Hopper, holy cow, what a a great training camp. He had earned himself a spot. And then Nick, I think it's Neiman. Is that right? Neiman? Neiman, Nick, Neiman comes to us as a veteran signing in adds a little bit of depth. And Christian Welch, who also had a great camp name, to the practice squad, so that was pretty glad
Jersey Al Bracco 32:01
to see him back there together. He's a good guy to have in the wings when you need some, when you need help,
Kelly Hodgson 32:08
and think back, like shortly after, you know, the Super Bowl. Last time we won the Super Bowl, it's like there was a just a paucity of impactful linebackers for a long time, and suddenly we have depth and speed and strength where we it's like, for the longest time, it's like, are weak spots the linebackers. But now it's like, hey, they are just as good as the defensive line.
CD Angeli 32:35
And I suppose on the flip side of that, let's talk about the cornerbacks. Not a lot of depth, not a lot of experience. We're little nervous that'll be a little bit of my Hot Pocket later. But Nate Hobbs really didn't play at all during the preseason. He's being declared healthy for week one, expected to be the starter. Obviously, we do not have Jair Alexander, who was released this off season. He's joined by kashawn Nixon Carrington, Valentine Bo Melton, Kamal Haden Hayden and Micah Robinson, who I think was the seventh round draft choice. This is not a squad of depth
Jersey Al Bracco 33:23
at all. Well, the fact that we've Hold on one second Robinson actually had to be he was let go to make room for neat for Neiman, or
Unknown Speaker 33:36
whoever, or even
Jersey Al Bracco 33:39
they will definitely they want him back on the practice squad, and I'm fairly sure that he'll, you know, that someone else is not going to claim him as a seventh round, you know, draft pick. So so he is not currently on the roster.
CD Angeli 33:55
Yeah, a lot of moves going on this week. So, yeah, yeah.
Kelly Hodgson 33:58
Make this make sense for me, because Are we just that desperate for quarterbacks that we had asked Beau Melton to switch over, or is he actually just better at quarterback than being than being a wide receiver? Normally, you actually go go out and find an actual quarterback, as opposed to, hey, cool.
Jersey Al Bracco 34:17
They really like the guy, right? They really like him. They like his attitude. They like his dedication to the game. They like the passion that he plays with. They like his athleticism and good and cool. Stevens good and coon Steven said when they were looking at him through the draft process, they felt right then and there that his all his measurables were more like a defensive back then a wide receiver. So they've always kind of had this in the back of their mind. And this year, you know, drafting two wide receivers in the first three rounds, there wasn't going to be any room for Beau Melton, so if you were ever going to try it, this would be the year to try it. And they. Actually had confidence that he could do it. And evidently, they think that he has.
Kelly Hodgson 35:05
He's serviceable as a quarterback. There's no doubt. So the pessimist to me, when always looks at the injury injury report, you know, halfway through the season, could they pull him up to be wide receiver? If we're desperate,
Jersey Al Bracco 35:17
that's always an option, right? I mean, he's there. I mean, I doubt if you know if that's what they have in their mind, but if three wide receivers, you know, go out for a game, he could do it right.
CD Angeli 35:32
So moving on to safety, we got Xavier McKinney, obviously Pro Bowl caliber guy right there, Evan Williams, who certainly came on early last year, still sitting at safety, Javon Bullard, who seemed to have the times a tough camp. The former, I believe first rounder, first rounder, I believe Zane Anderson, Catan aldapo And Omar brown on injured reserve. Again, you might look at this and think, got McKinney yay, got Hobbs yay. And after that, crickets needs. Well, now see crickets, but you got some guys who need to, who need to mature, I think, quickly and take that on. What do you guys think?
Kelly Hodgson 36:17
Well, I think Zane Anderson has that upside that he's definitely one of the instrumental people on special teams. So he has some other intangibles. Whether he gets a whole lot of snaps on defense, I think he'll be good on teams,
CD Angeli 36:30
all right. And finally, special teams. I'm excited about this. I'm excited Brandon McManus, kicker, Daniel Whelan, kicking 60 yard boots all preseason and that, or is it just got a nice three year extension. That's our long snapper. I don't think we've been this set on special teams for a long time, the exception of maybe a returner, obviously. So very exciting there. So that's your 53 man roster, until it isn't. So definitely, youth is again, a huge thing. We can see that with the departure of Clark and obviously injuries in depth, this is all going to be something we're going to be tracking as we go through the rest of the beginning part of the season. So all right, Detroit coming to week one right now we're going to take it to halftime. Please sit back and listen to this message from our sponsor.

CD Angeli 37:51
Welcome back to cheese head radio. We're talking this Micah Parsons day. It's Micah Parsons day. That's what we're going to call it. Michael Parsons day, cheese at Radio. I'm CD Angeli tundra vision on social media, flanked by that Packer girl, Kelly Hodgson and split end with Jersey al GBP, Jersey al Bronco to my other direction, because I forgot what I said. Anyway, let's hit a little bit into this. Other things to talk about, maybe just a little bit, just some things that have been making the rounds, and just some conversations now that we've got this thing. And obviously, Micah Parsons, we do have some free agents coming up this year, some names that aren't too big. And I don't know if this year is going to be as pressing as it was in the past, but Malik Willis, Romeo Dobbs, Rasheed Walker, Sean, Ryan Kingsley and gabari and Quay Walker are the guys looking to possibly need to be extended this year. Is there anyone among that group that you would extend? Because in some ways, each one has kind of their own story that you can make a case that you could extend them, and you could also not extend any of them.
Kelly Hodgson 39:08
I think if you could get any of these for a song on an extension, I would wouldn't say no, but I think I could argue why each one of them may not come back.
Jersey Al Bracco 39:22
Take the easy ones. Rasheed Walker, he's not going to he's going to get a nice contract from somebody has a starting left tackle in the league, Sean Ryan, they have replacements ready for Sean Ryan, you know. So I doubt if, if they're going to give him anything or as much as he wants. And igbari, well, we were just talking about how crowded the room is back there, so he's definitely the last year. Quay Walker is interesting, right? He is. He is the interesting one there to me. You know, they, they wouldn't give him the 50. Year extension the fifth year. What's the term? Option? Option, sorry, and I'm thinking that that, you know, they said they would look at extending him, but there's been no other other there's been nothing about that since they said that. And that brings me to, does somebody else possibly emerge back there? You know, like one particular linebacker had a really, really nice training camp this year, and who may or may not be somebody I'm going to talk about later, but so Quay Walker will be interesting. Malik Willis, I don't know why he would resign here. He's going to get a starting job somewhere or somebody will bring him in with the intention of being a starter, whether he earns a job or not, I don't know. Romeo Dobbs, hmm, that one's hard to say. We got to see how the year plays out. See how golden and Savion Williams play out to see how much value he's he will still have to the Packers. That's my take on all of
Kelly Hodgson 41:06
them. Yeah, I think, I think it's a show me year for Dobbs and Ford for quite, and I'll talk about quite later. It's like, if you have, if they both have good, good first half of the season, I think you know, their their their capital goes way up. If, like, say, the six games in and Quay Walker is really having a good season, I could see possibly offering an extension. But if he's absolutely stinking up the joint, this may be his last season in Green Bay.
CD Angeli 41:34
Well, I think Dobbs is possibly a candidate for good cause, maybe to try to get a couple draft picks back too. I mean, I could see him going at the deadline if, uh, someone's interested in a in a veteran wide receiver. So now,
Kelly Hodgson 41:47
wasn't there, weren't there rumors that he was going to be on, on the trading block this year? NATO, okay, made up stuff. Okay,
CD Angeli 41:54
yeah, all right. So we keep an eye on that as the season goes on. A little more pressing, and this was actually making a bit of the news cycles today and yesterday, until, of course, this trade happened, and now no one's talking. Yeah, it doesn't matter. Now we don't care anymore. But Jaden Reid, obviously slot receiver. So much potential. We really burst onto the scene, and then he really has been kind of off and on with injuries, quite a bit, has a Jones fracture, and this is a little cause of consternation. Obviously, I'm usually the type of person who says, You know what, let's be conservative, and have you come back under percent instead of rushing it, is going to go without surgery, has returned to practice, wants him to play. I'm sure Kelly, you can talk a little bit about Jones fracture, but obviously this is something that's a bit of a risk reward. Hopefully that's going to come
Kelly Hodgson 42:54
out. I hope so, a Jones fracture. If you think of your hand, and you've got the long Ray bones and the meaty part of your hand. And these guys can see what I'm showing but yeah, obviously people listening can't it is the fifth metatarsal, so in English, it is the long bone of the foot that corresponds with the pinky side of your foot. Really important for planting. It's really important for pivoting. Non surgical treatment is usually six to eight weeks. If you have to have surgery, you're looking at three to four months. So I would say, baby it now that you don't need surgery, because three to four months is the entire season. But you know, this isn't a sprain, this is a fracture to a pretty important bone.
Jersey Al Bracco 43:44
Would the with the biggest risk to to it be the movement or bad steps or somebody stepping on
Kelly Hodgson 43:54
it, all of the above, because what you want don't want is non union, where that bone does not come
Jersey Al Bracco 43:59
together. Give me one. What's the worst?
Kelly Hodgson 44:03
The worst, it doesn't heal, and he has to have surgery,
Jersey Al Bracco 44:06
things that I mentioned,
Kelly Hodgson 44:08
crap. This is me guessing, and this is what hold
Jersey Al Bracco 44:13
you to it. Um, write it down.
Kelly Hodgson 44:17
Probably getting it's, you know, colliding, if really, especially if you're like, flexing your foot's completely extended, or you rotate it. I think all the above our risks
Jersey Al Bracco 44:30
come on. This is Sophie's Choice. You got to pick one. I'm giving you two choices, basically, somebody stepping on it, or some other type of motion related I
Kelly Hodgson 44:43
think there'll be more impact if somebody steps on it. The worry is, if you dislocate it, you have it where it's not lined up, that really increases the severity. That means you're going to have to have surgery, which
Jersey Al Bracco 44:54
means you're out for the season. Somebody stepping on it
Kelly Hodgson 44:58
worse. Yeah, or you know you're going. And pile driven down, and there's a lot of weight, you know,
Jersey Al Bracco 45:02
can I get you to pick one? Just say it, come on.
Kelly Hodgson 45:06
Okay, both. Biggest force is some big behemoth stepping on it, probably,
Jersey Al Bracco 45:09
thank you. I only am pressing you on that because that's what I think. But I'm, you know, I'm not a doctor, even though I say that,
Kelly Hodgson 45:17
I'm not a sports medicine specialist. But, you know, I've seen a hand. We're just having fun. It's okay when I see a Jones fracture. I sent him to a foot specialist, because it does have
Jersey Al Bracco 45:26
the potential to be bad. So who's this guy, Jones? Like, it's named after, um, probably
Kelly Hodgson 45:30
some orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist. It's like anything in medicine. It's an old, white, dead dude that gets to name something.
Jersey Al Bracco 45:36
And what did he do, find the way to
Kelly Hodgson 45:40
treat it or that, I don't know. Probably he described it and then he treated it and then again, named it. And most F Ms are like, nobody knows why they got named it was, like,
Jersey Al Bracco 45:50
100 years ago. Okay. Anyway, it's
Kelly Hodgson 45:53
not as bad as a list Frank, but that's another, yeah, doom and gloom foot injury, but this is one I would probably have him in a boot, letting it heal up, so he doesn't need surgery. Yeah,
Jersey Al Bracco 46:05
he was in a boot for a while, but he's back in practice now, running around on it. So,
Kelly Hodgson 46:12
so the big thing is, you want that bone to heal, and I don't think they would let him run on it if there wasn't enough healing. Because, again, non union, the ends of the bone not coming together, is the worst case scenario.
Jersey Al Bracco 46:23
And I imagine there are different levels of
Kelly Hodgson 46:27
the fracture, yeah, fracture, right? Is it a partial fracture? Is it all the way through? Is it displaced? You can just connect the dots. The more, the uglier it is, the longer the recovery time, the higher the risk of problems,
Jersey Al Bracco 46:40
yeah, yeah. Okay,
CD Angeli 46:43
all right. And since we are not quite ready to start doing our predictions, since our first game is not until after next week's show, we have a couple predictions we're going to run through really quickly. These will be kind of like not a lot of conversation. Let's just kind of shoot them out there. But let's talk about what some of our bold predictions are. First of all, who do you see as being your breakout defender of the year? Who is going to be the breakout person that's going to just take over this year? I'll go first. I'm going to say Devante Wyatt, former first rounder, Clark is gone. This guy is next man up. I think that he goes up and he establishes his draft position, probably just in time for an extension, and he will be dt prime this year.
Kelly Hodgson 47:31
Okay, if I if it wasn't breakout, I'd say Micah Parsons, but breakout, just because I'm going to be the Pollyanna optimist here. Normally that's Al, um, I'm just gonna say Bob Melton, just for for grins and giggles, because we're so thin at cornerback, so the the bar is pretty low at this point. If he gets a couple interceptions, maybe a pick six, suddenly he is the little hero that nobody thought thought would be in the quarterback section of the of the defense.
Jersey Al Bracco 48:08
That would be a great little underdogs. It would be fabulous,
Speaker 1 48:12
because I'm still at the Y and see a quarterback,
Jersey Al Bracco 48:16
yeah, well, I think there's really only one obvious answer, is with Edgar and Cooper. However, I'm not going to go with the obvious answer, and I'm going to go with a surprise Tyron hopper. I am fully on the Tyron Hopper train. Let me tell you I am the conductor. I want to see him get I want to see him get some of McDuffie snaps, because I think if he does, I think he's a perfect compliment to an Edgar and Cooper, much better, much more than Quay Walker is. So that's so maybe it's kind of more hope than belief here in my case,
CD Angeli 48:52
all right, next category, biggest surprise, biggest surprise, for better or for worse, who is someone's going to absolutely blow us away. Didn't see it coming, or totally disappoint us. Didn't see that coming. My choice is I'm going to go with Don TV and wicks. I think with all of these injuries going on and some of the stuff going back and forth, I think by mid season, it is golden, and Wix starters at wide receivers, and Wix finally steps up and says, I'm an everyday wide receiver too.
Kelly Hodgson 49:25
So mine actually plays into Alan. I'm going to go the opposite direction, you know, the big stinker of the of the year, you know, please. I hope I'm wrong, but I have really kind of lost faith in Quay Walker. And you know, it's a make or break. Does he get extended or not season? He really hasn't taken that next step, and a lot of times he seemed to vanish into the woodwork during during games. Um, if he has another bad season, I think this will play into what Al's gonna hype up. But, um. I would not be surprised if this is his last season. This room by packer,
Jersey Al Bracco 50:04
and I'm just going to double down and Tyron hopper.
CD Angeli 50:08
Two, two. Yep,
Jersey Al Bracco 50:11
all board.
CD Angeli 50:14
Next category, offensive player who exceeds role expectations. Let's go on the offensive side of the ball. Who are we going to say? This guy has to be on the field. I'm going to say Luke Musgrave may sound odd because he comes off as a starter, but he's really been in craft shadow. I think this year he starts going down the middle of the field, maybe catches the ball, maybe stays upright afterwards a little more often. But you know, when those wide receivers are feeling a little tricky, maybe it's going to be a situation where you only have Matthew golden. You're, you know, we love those tight ends. I think he's going to step up and mature. This year,
Kelly Hodgson 50:55
I am going to go with Romeo Dobbs. A lot of people wrote him off last year as a head case, Problem Child in the locker and what have you. But to quote, Friday Night Lights, clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose he and just watching that him play this past week, I this is his season to really show that he's he's a mature and ready for prime time wide receiver. I think he's going to have just a banger of a season. You know, is he going to be number one or number two? Probably not, but he's going to contribute in a substantial fashion.
Jersey Al Bracco 51:30
And I'm going to go with Tyron Hopper, who trifecta? Oh, wait, no, wait, wait, this is offense. Sorry, nice try. Al, sorry. Oh, well, I was hoping for the trifecta. I'm going to go based on, on the the phrasing here, a depth piece or rotational player who by mid season, we're all saying this guy has to be on the field. I'm going to go with that more than exceed expectations. I'm going to say Jordan Morgan, as we talked about before. I think initially he's going to be that guy to fill in wherever. But I think he'll it's going to play so well wherever they put him, they're going to have to decide, you know, he just has to start somewhere every game.
CD Angeli 52:16
All right. Next category, our special teams game changer, who is going to be the person that comes in and absolutely turns things on its head? Kelly, I'll let you go first, because I'm in a cheat.
Kelly Hodgson 52:29
I'm going to go. Daniel Whalen, we finally have a punter that does not suck. We had the weapon or the missile, or whatever the heck you call that guy, man, the tall, skinny guy. We've had so many punters in the past several years that are like, Great in camp, and then it gets a little chilly, and then they're kicking it for like 35 yards. I think Waylon is the real deal. I think he's consistent, which is something we really need on special teams. And I expect many coffin corner kicks from I'm just putting it down, like on the 15th yard line or beyond that. So, yeah, I'm going with a punter.
Jersey Al Bracco 53:10
Punters are people too. They are
CD Angeli 53:15
Al, go ahead. You
Jersey Al Bracco 53:16
want me to go? Okay, I'm gonna go a little off, off track here, and more of an upset. I'm going to go with Bo Milton. I think he is going to be the greatest gunner in the history of the NFL. Or, actually, wow, they call him the flyer. They call them flyers. They don't call them gunners now, but he can fly, and he's shown that in preseason, that he can be very good at that, and I think he can make make some impacts on opposing punt returners. So I'm going with Bill Melton,
CD Angeli 53:47
all right, well, and I'm just going to go with the whole Trifecta here. I know it's cheating, but McManus, Whalen and orzatch, I mean, these three guys each have the potential to be all pros at their position. McManus is just a machine at making long field goals. Waylon is kicking 60 yarders, obviously, or Zach was just extended, so he's doing his job. It's a confidence level and special teams that we haven't had in a long time. So I, I'm, I'm just gonna go with that whole group. So cheating. Finally, let's go with our prediction record for the season. As I've said, this is it. This is the window opening. You don't believe in it, maybe. And Gouda cunts doesn't believe in it, but maybe we do. Who knows what is the final record going to be? I will start out as I'm going to say 12 and five. It's optimistic, not going to lie. But gutier sent the message that we're all in with the guys we have. And I think this takes over this whole team. It is time for the Green Bay Packers to exceed Extra. Tation, so boom, 12 five.
Kelly Hodgson 55:04
We're all pretty close in our predictions, and I'm going to say 11 and six. Does that put us at second or third place in the NFC North? It very well could. All I know is that we're going to finish ahead of the Chicago Bears and punch a ticket to the playoffs with that record.
Jersey Al Bracco 55:20
Okay, well, earlier today, I was at 10 and seven, but then something happened. We kind of added a player today, right? So I said, All right, well, I have to bump that prediction up, and I almost went to 12 and five to match you CD, but they have a really difficult schedule this year. They They really do. So I'm going to be a little more cautious, and I'm going to go 11 and six, second place in the north wild card playoff berth.
Kelly Hodgson 55:57
Alright, you heard it here first guys. And if John Ray hurl was here. He'd be like 17 and Oh, win it all. So John, I hope you are right, wherever you are, buddy,
CD Angeli 56:09
alright, and with that almost at the end here, guys, it is time for our
Speaker 2 56:22
sauce cheesy to is
CD Angeli 56:27
time for our last hot take from each of us. Sit back. We're going to take through our soap boxes and give you one last reflection on your Green Bay Packers, Jersey Al, as always, we're going to start with you.
Jersey Al Bracco 56:41
Brian effing good and coos did it? There are only two players in league history with at least 12 sacks in their first four seasons, Reggie White and Micah Evan Parsons. That's it. That is my hot pockets. I gates.
CD Angeli 57:03
Very brief, excellent. All right, it is all there. It is everything we have a first round wide receiver. Finally, Jordan love, he's ready to break out. We got Micah Parsons, all
Xander was going to have his head screwed on straight, and would be at his prime at cornerback, but his injuries and his attitude got him released. Surely the Packers were going to address this glaring need correct. But other than a trade for Raiders corner Nate Hobbs, who we've yet to really see play, our cornerback room is exceedingly unproven. Now, like everyone else in Green Bay on draft day, we're figured, okay, we got we got golden quarterback coming on round two. We're all looking at the list saying, Oh, who's going to be the corner? No. Round three, it was going to be why could take this guy in? Round four didn't come. It wasn't till round seven. We picked up Michael Robinson, and he's probably gonna be on the practice squad. We assume that gook Huntley know what they're doing. But my opinion is that the Packers don't make it deep into the playoffs this year. It's likely going to be because of one of two things, injuries or the cornerback room, and that is my
Unknown Speaker 58:28
hot pockets.
Kelly Hodgson 58:31
So my Hot Pocket is directed to every belly aching and title fan in Packer dome. Are you not entertained? Now, the Packers never draft a wide receiver in the first round. They never dip their toe into free agency, and they sure as hell never sell the farm on a big name trade. Oh, well, you look at that. Looks like the Packers are all in and you armchair general manners should just shut your pie hole for a little bit. You were completely wrong. A year ago, the Packers signed Josh Jacobs in the off season to get things going. This past April, they drafted Matthew Golden, and today, they completed the trifecta and grabbed the biggest crate on the blocks in perhaps 30 years. This isn't your father or your grandfather's Packer front office big risks with the hopes of big benefits. I hope everyone quits their belly aching because they're not. They're not. They got exactly what they wanted in the past 12 plus months. It tells me the Packers are all in and the chips are on the table, and they aren't going to let up until they reach the Super Bowl strapping folks. It may be a bumpy ride, but it's going to be amazing. And that is my hot pockets.
CD Angeli 59:52
All right, some good hot pockets there. That's going to bring us the conclusion of our show. And I think it's about time to blow the horn. You.
